When planning dams and snow-making reservoirs, the selection of a suitable site is crucial. At the selected site, detailed investigations are then carried out, depending on the project, by means of subsurface exploration measures and geological mapping. These serve as a basis for the geotechnical processing, necessary planning and calculations, for the construction of the plant. The professional execution is ensured by a geotechnical or water-legal construction supervision.
Depending on the height of the dam, the operation of snow-making storage facilities requires the designation of a dam or reservoir supervisor. This function includes the performance of regular inspections with functional checks of the relevant plant components and the inspection of the condition and operational safety of the storage pond. The documentation takes place in annual and monitoring reports (5-yearly), in which maintenance work to be carried out is discussed and the due date of recurring tests (leak test/stand test etc.) is pointed out.
